Depends. I think he peaked on the 2002 Under-the-Radar tour, everything subsequent to that was a letdown. I think as his voice eventually crapped out, so too did his on-stage panache.

I saw them in 98 & 99...so there ya go. He was great at both shows.

I saw him in 98, even at that time, he struggled vocally (don't stop believin' high note) and for some reason Muggs Cain was drumming. Think Deen was sick. Grrr... Still, Augeri's presence was pretty tame.

I didn't hear him stammering, but I did hear a nervous overcompensating use of vibrato. He has a good vibrato and when he's nervous, he appears to fall into that comfort zone and can over use it in places.

Not "stammering" in the sense of "stuttering"...more like, as you say, overusing his vibrato and then trying to fit in the next word in time...came off as clumsy in spots...

OHhhhh... well, Arnel has a history of having timing problems when he sings live. I think it was detailed in an article about him somewhere. What he needs is a shot of confidence, but that can only come with experience over time.

Sadistic.
Should do the trick, and the electric jolts would add a lot to the stage show. You only think he jumps high now.

Agreed.
Which is odd, considering Neal's oft-cited refrain of wanting to rock out for the past eight years.
As far as I'm concerned, Neal has solidified Journey's reputation as senior prom background music with this new frontman.

Then, that would apply for any singer of the band, Perry included.

How so?
A Journey singer with some actual teeth would not be so easily pigeonholed.
Eric Martin, Jeff Soto...these guys could go from middling double-ply weepy dreck to arena anthem with equal zeal.

Kevin found the two combined gave him the most complete sound quality and would stand up to Deen's SPL. The windscreens are there more for his SPL and protection of the combined elements and to look better then for outdoor wind protection. "

Might have sounded better live and in person, but I wasn't impressed by Separate Ways at all. The other two songs were pretty good. In regards to detecting nerves..come on man...Arnel's a professional and pros can mask their nerves.

I am really liking Separate Ways, perhaps more so than Faithfully or After All These Years. I thought I was done with that song after one two many listens but it just sounds a little different vocally on this occasion.

just checked out Ellen's website. an overwhelming majority of 99% of viewers' comments seems to be digging the new journey lineup and their upcoming new album and concert tours for their live performance on Ellen's. it's not bad at all. I guess it's just a few of us with sharp ears could really tell if something is at fault, while most of the population are contented on listening and enjoying the music.

read one comment from a poster who mistook Pineda for a Mongolian national (due to his Asian looks) and wanted the whole Journey group to perform in Mongolia.

A casual Fans perspective

Postby classicstyxfan » Thu May 29, 2008 8:55 am

1st a disclaimer......I am not fanatical about Journey...I like their music, but no more or less then many other bands of the Classic rock Genre. I think this allows me to be completely objective, as I have no allegiance to any particular line up of theband, and/or band politics. with that perspective I offer the following observations:

I caught Separate ways on Ellen, did not see the other 2 songs.....I too noticed Arnel was a bit flat on notes on 3-4 diffent occasions, but I focus on Vocals a lot more than the casual listener, I'd guess 90 percent of people listening either wouldnt notice or wouldnt care.

This was the 1st time I have heard AP period. The guy has a very good voice for rock. Again , not knowing the situation is it possible the monitors or earpiece ( I didnt notice if he had one or not ) were not working well ? As someone who did vocals in a high school garage band, I can tell you if you cant hear yourself well, intonation is a real bitch to achieve. If this is the cause of his problems with pitch, then it is fixable.......if he doesnt have perfect pitch this problem will be persistant though.

Stage Presence ? the guy should be cut some slack, at least for a while. Give him some time to develop this, if it still seems awkward after a full tour, then it's unlikely to improve after that amount of time. I thought it looked like he wasnt enjoying himself for the 1st 1/2 of the song, but loosened up a bit towards the end.

BTW, I kind of liked what he did with the ending...." the scream" If he can do things like that without going overboard, I think its great, I wouldnt want him to stick exactly to the way Perry or others phrased/arranged everything. I think it will be interesting to see if his voice gets better as the tour progresses, or if the strain of these songs will take it's toll. Only time will tell.

Based on what I saw, AP could be awesome with time, and with a lot of attention to his intonation. The Jury should not come to a verdict just yet.

Alan's great. He was the guy that recommended my mic that I use now and I've been happy with it ever since. Very cool guy.

Compare Journey's Ellen appearance with Def Leppard's via youtube. Journey kicked their asses and DL has been using the same singer forever. I think that Arnel is young in that this is BIG TIME and he's new at it. A performance coach would help him a bit. If this is how he starts off, here's hoping that he gets even better. As far as the ballads, he does great on them. I think he will be only better with time.

Thanks.
