Well said.
Journey's first effort with a new singer was not going to be a new direction for the band.
That absolultely is not true. When Journey hired Robert Fleischman, they were already going to go in a more vocal direction. They then fired him and hired Perry to continue it.
It simply wouldn't make sense. If the first album post-Augeri had been with JSS, it still would have sounded like Journey.
Journey is a touring band. The more they toured with JSS it seemed the more he was trying to sound like Perry. It just didn't work, IMO.
So, the pendulum swung in the other direction and now they are trying to be a Journey soundalike band from 198x. That to me seems like a mistake also.
Again, they had a middle ground with Augeri.
It wouldn't have been Soul Sirkus, it wouldn't have been any sort of prog-rock (sorry ProgRocker). Who knows if they'll open things up a little on this next effort with Arnel.
They didn't 'open things up' any with JSS, why would they do it with Arnel?
Even still, Journey's always going to sound like Journey. Maybe with a twist or two, but it's never going to be a total switch in directions. And it shouldn't be. They have a successful formula.
They now have a nostalgic forumula. It has everything to do with the past, 'legacy sound', as Jonathan put it.
