Actually, he just told me that I didn't make the cut for the finals for "Journey: The Bass-Off." I guess Ross hadn't been pulling his weight lately, so I auditioned for this reality show Journey's filming so they can discover the next great American bass player.

Cronin is a guest judge. What the hell he knows about bass playing, beats me... but he's been all over the place lately, so what can I say?

But, I can't complain too much. I did get props for being the only one there to even know OF the song Kohoutek, let alone its bass lines....

Well said.

Journey's first effort with a new singer was not going to be a new direction for the band.

That absolultely is not true. When Journey hired Robert Fleischman, they were already going to go in a more vocal direction. They then fired him and hired Perry to continue it.

It simply wouldn't make sense. If the first album post-Augeri had been with JSS, it still would have sounded like Journey.

Journey is a touring band. The more they toured with JSS it seemed the more he was trying to sound like Perry. It just didn't work, IMO.

So, the pendulum swung in the other direction and now they are trying to be a Journey soundalike band from 198x. That to me seems like a mistake also.

Again, they had a middle ground with Augeri.

It wouldn't have been Soul Sirkus, it wouldn't have been any sort of prog-rock (sorry ProgRocker). Who knows if they'll open things up a little on this next effort with Arnel.

They didn't 'open things up' any with JSS, why would they do it with Arnel?

Even still, Journey's always going to sound like Journey. Maybe with a twist or two, but it's never going to be a total switch in directions. And it shouldn't be. They have a successful formula.

They now have a nostalgic forumula. It has everything to do with the past, 'legacy sound', as Jonathan put it.

Yep, now they can scrape the bottom of the fan barrel for all it's worth...and they have a brand new barrel of carpet bagging fans to dip into. What was said on the CBS show?? 3-4 million pinoys living in the US. Who says the band doesn't do market research!?!!

There aren't that many pinoys here in the US...yet.

I take umbrage to YOUR assertion that the new "demographic" are depicted as "bottom of the barrel" or as "carpet-bagger", when actually, they are really excited that AP is the new lead singer of Journey and they want to support him and the band.

C'mon Frank. I know you to be better than this after all those battles. The battle here IMHO should be directed at either mgmt or Journey itself prior to them hiring Arnel. The rest of it is what it is...whatever anyone makes of it. I take it as a positive that a band I love to hear is still out there, still performing songs that I connect with. I get that others DO NOT.

The world beyond that is something we cannot control.

Hope that I meet most of you on the concert trail because the ones I have met...they simply rock :)

Well, that was low of you to characterize us that way.
Those are Americans of Filipino descent you're calling "bottom of the barrel",
so don't tell me your disparaging remark isn't racist.

As for "carpetbaggers"...
Journey NEVER left Philippine radio, and I'm not talking about nostalgia programming.
Stations south of 99.5 have played Journey, 1980's-2000's, because the songs are still popular across the board.
THAT's why so many lounge bands still cover Journey,
---which is why Arnel was singing Journey material, also for decades.

Is THAT why you folks object to Arnel?
Because of the fans you ONLY NOW realize you've been sharing Journey with?

:(

Dude Frank, sometimes you have some great points but in this thread you come off as very spiteful and bitter. Lighten up dude, the more fans Journey has the better (even though I'd still love them if they had 0).

To call out newer fans and call them "carpetbaggers" is ridiculous... not everyone's been a Journey fan for 858493 years like you... hell, I've only been a Journey fan for three, maybe four years myself!

No.

IMO anyway, Journey has always been a band of the future, not the past. Living off of the nostalgia may get most of them to retirement, but it is very uninteresting and boring to me. The Augeri years were about moving forward, not reaching back 20-30 yrs ago.

I don't care where Arnel is from. It's bullshit to say his heritage will bring a significant number of buyers. Again, when Augeri was hired did everybody start saying Journey would enjoy an influx of NY'ers buying into the band? Out of those couple million, only a small percent will actually buy into Journey.

If you were, your eyes would have told you that much of the crowd was from that place Arnel calls home. You can't use the Augeri New York thing as the basis for an argument. It's a weak stance clearly. Filipinos like to support winners especially those that that call the PI home. Arnel, is the musical equivalent to Boxing's Manny Pacquiao, or 9ball champ, Efren Reyes, or even Broadway star, Leah Salonga. Ask yourself, has there ever been an Asian lead for any musical group of this magnitude? Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls, while certainly noteworthy, doesn't approach the history that is Arnel with Journey.

I've been a fan long enough to remember hearing AWYWI in Caddyshack The Movie at the Drive-in, and seeing Journey on Tom Snyder. So don't group me in as a newbie.

It ain't BS. His heritage will support, but they won't be the only ones buying that CD set. A whole rainbow of peeps will be there. 500K sold and I'm turning Stevew2 into a Castro District Leatherboy.

This argument makes me laugh, if you only understood Filipino culture and its response to "national pride" (have you checked out youtube lately?), you'd be surprised at the number of sales this album would generate, not just in the United States, but worldwide; and that's from the Filipino buyers alone. A significant number of Filipinos are not strangers to Journey, especially the Gen-Xers. The fact that Arnel has been covering the band for the last 25 years is a testament to this, and with Arnel's inclusion to the band, the support is spreading like wildfire across the demographical board. Go figure.

Did I get that right?
WalMart only needs to move 250k bundles, then?
(That's easily in the realm of the possible.)

Or are Revelation and the re-do disc sld separately?
Someone posted that the WaMart they hit had more
of the redo discs on its shelves (???)

Thanks,

Its one package. Maybe they got confused with the original Greatest Hits release. The covers are quite similar at a glance.

One package, but when a release features 2 audio discs, it only has to sell half as much unit wise to be credited.

Fan For Life

Postby NunYoBusiness » Wed Jun 04, 2008 12:12 am

I have been a fan of Journey since day one (No they didn't come into being when Steve #1 joined the band), I am that old, and have been with them since the very 1st LP. Over the years I have watched and smiled everytime something changes in the band. Being a fan means something different to everyone, for me I was a fan of THE BAND. The voice has always held no sway over me, I was and am still a fan of THE BAND. To me each voice adds to the overall history of the band, each bringing a new and fresh perspective to the band. I will be forever thankful that the band decided to carry on no matter how many times they have to replace a singer. As long as a band like Journey is willing to keep making music I will be in their corner. :D
