I wish I could, but I will be stuck the evening shift. I will be at the Styx/Edgar Winter show in Rockford on Thursday though.

Change your shift, if possible!! It's going to be the last Midwest show until the next year :)

If the weather will cooperate, it's going to be a GREAT show :D

I'll be in Rockford on Sunday :)

I tried the best I could today, but can not get off work, the fact that it is a Friday night, no one wants to fill in. If it was during the middle of the week it would of been no problem. I did catch his show in Chicago Ridge last month, so that will have to do.

I work less than a mile away and I have been offered free tickets to the sponsor’s tent (free food & free booze)!!! I have also been offered the same deal for the next night to see the Doobie Brothers. I know I’m going on Saturday but Friday (DDY) not so sure. I have no desire to hear about his 200 year marriage and the “follow your dreams” speech for the 100th time.

For me it would be worth going just to meet some of you guys!!! :D

Damn good concert wasn't it? I was mesmerized when he did "Castle Walls" and Tommy D's guitar solo at the end of "Desert Moon" (including playing the guitar behind his head lol) was worth the price of admission alone. Excluding the "Dreams" Speech and DDY talking about his long marriage, you'd be missing a great show, ChicagoStyx, if you didn't go

It sure was a good show. Not only do you get to see Castle Walls live, but Pieces of Eight live as well. Those two songs are worth going alone.

You would be correct. I have no plans to see Styx do the same thing either. Unless they come out with some new music I have no interest in seeing them anytime soon

Castle Walls is so good live. And yes, Tommy's extended Desert Moon solo is awesome. Very tasteful. Tommy might not shred like a Lukather or a Petrucci, but he's got FEEL. I wish I could get a soundboard recording of that entire live rendition of DM. I think there's one shitty video of it on YouTube. Audio's so bad it's not even worth watching.

If you want a 2 minute video of just the solo, PM me. I've got one from June and I was in the front row.

I did. It was a good show, although there were some sound problems with the drums for the first few songs, and the mix was off a little all night (a bit too much bass even for this bass player). Those didn't impact the show though. This was the first time I saw DDY with Jimmy Lahey and Tom Sharp. There were a few musical screw ups (Tommy D. I think pulled his guitar chord in the middle of a solo when he strayed to the center ... kinda funny; I think I was one of the few who could tell).

The setup reminded me of the outdoor show I saw outside of Montreal last summer where Glen was there and Kyle was still the drummer. For the first time since DDY goes solo I can no longer complain about the drummer. Tom is excellent and not only did he have a good sounding drumkit and play songs better than Kyle - he can tune drums properly. For example, I always thought "Castle Walls" with Kyle was lacking (not the right fills and badly pitched toms). Not with Tom. Kyle's an OK drummer. Tom is better, period. Tom is playing the John Panozzo parts very well. Welcome to the fold.

With Jimmy there, they're doing more "stretching out" - for example, extended solos at the end of "Rockin' the Paradise". Jimmy is also a very nice addition.

It was interesting to hear "100 Years From Now" all in English. It was almost jarring as I'm used to the French version. Before introducing the song, DDY said the album would be out next year which jives with what we talked about before Hunchback.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear the full intro for Roboto. Unless my memory is faulty, it wasn't that way last year in Montreal.

My only real criticism, and it's not a new one: I wish DDY would play more keys, but I've come to accept that it's not going to be that way.

Bottom line: I have yet to see a bad DDY show. I wouldn't rank this one in the top 3 (those not in order would be the HOB Lost Treasures show, the first show with Glen in NJ, and the first orchestral show at the Rosemont), but it was definitely solid. Glad I came to Chicago to see it.

Setlist:
The Message (taped - intro music)
Grand Illusion
Lady
Lorelei
Show Me The Way (a capella)
Castle Walls
Light Up
Mr. Roboto
Desert Moon
100 Years From Now
Don't Let It End
Rockin' The Paradise
Suite Madame Blue
Babe
The Best of Times/AD 1958
Come Sail Away
Grand Finale (taped - outro music)

Thanks for the review, Allan. Dennis really does seem to be playing at the top of his game nowadays.

(ETA: I agree about those top 3. I would substitute NY Beacon Theater, mainly because I saw that one and didn't see the Rosemont show. :) )

Oops, an unscheduled "rest" in the music?? LOL!

I wonder why he doesn't go wireless .... He must have his reasons.

Back in June in Trois Rivieres, Tommy and Jimmy were both walking towards the microphone to sing backup (Rockin the Paradise) and their guitar keys got hooked together somehow. They quickly realized what was going on and unhooked, sending them both back two steps and they missed their cue because they were laughing too hard. Too funny! Jimmy really makes the difference in the sound, doesn't he??

I've yet to see (hear?) Tom Sharp. I hope he's still with them tonight in Gatineau.

I honestly can't remember.

I'm wondering who he'll have singing duet with him in 100 Years tonight. It was Jean Ravel back in June. To be honest, I have yet to hear it live all in English and I'd love to hear that version but I doubt he'll do that tonight considering where he is.

You know, one should never give a Canadian ideas:

http://www.youtube.com/v/MDgE6cS_PhE&hl=en&fs=1

Except for the first few beginning notes, the entire 8:17 seconds of Desert Moon from last night's concert in Gatineau. I was on Dennis' side in the front.

(Note: I am NOT a professional videographer by ANY means so you get what you get).

Tommy has gone back to his Strat from the Les Paul he had in Trois Rivieres in June. Maybe the Les Paul was just borrowed??

I'll post more later, but I've got to feed that bottomless pit that is presently masquerading as my 11 year old son. :-)

To continue this guitar problems story, at Sunday night's show he was doing figure eights on center stage the stage (but isn't it Glen's job to pace??) and he tripped over his guitar cord. I'm pretty sure I saw him say a word that rhymes with duck, laugh, and keep playing, LOL!

It was a great show Sunday night. The whole band seemed to be in a good mood and they delivered a solid, tight show.

Jimmy definitely does make a huge difference in sound. The band sounds downright heavy with his addition. The few spots he gets to play are great too, like in 100 years. The Styx songs really shine with the addition of the 2nd guitar back into the mix.
