It's a city thing where the fans can bond and come together as one and represent their stomping grounds through competition, and it's our job as fans to keep it going. Think about it, players come and go, but we will always be here.
It's true, but when as a fan you HAVE to go too, it's just not the same picking some other team just because they are local and I can get to a game. I still want to root for my comfort team! (I'm such a girl)
That's a whole different scenario. Root for whoever you want but that's what separates the fans from the diehards. Diehards are emotionally connected through the city/team and fans just root for a team they prefer.
In my case. Once I love something, I'll always love it. I started liking the Raiders when In 1976 when I was 4. I started following the Wings after football season, just to make the offseason go by faster. That year (84-85) the Wings got swept 3 games to none in the first round by the Blackhawks. But with everything I've liked, I just stick with it. No concious effort, that's just the way it is, whether it's sports teams, music or whatever.
I'm not one of those people who moves from trend to trend then years later bashes what they were into. I've never even understood that.
