It's a city thing where the fans can bond and come together as one and represent their stomping grounds through competition, and it's our job as fans to keep it going. Think about it, players come and go, but we will always be here.

It's true, but when as a fan you HAVE to go too, it's just not the same picking some other team just because they are local and I can get to a game. I still want to root for my comfort team! (I'm such a girl  )

That's a whole different scenario. Root for whoever you want but that's what separates the fans from the diehards. Diehards are emotionally connected through the city/team and fans just root for a team they prefer.

In my case. Once I love something, I'll always love it. I started liking the Raiders when In 1976 when I was 4. I started following the Wings after football season, just to make the offseason go by faster. That year (84-85) the Wings got swept 3 games to none in the first round by the Blackhawks. But with everything I've liked, I just stick with it. No concious effort, that's just the way it is, whether it's sports teams, music or whatever.
I'm not one of those people who moves from trend to trend then years later bashes what they were into. I've never even understood that.

Well, I would say that I'm not 'fanatical' about my sports. That is to say I don't face paint, or dress like Phil Kessel's BVDs for halloween. But I could be considered a 'die-hard'.

Been a fan of the Red Sox since 1975.
Been a fan of the Bruins since 1980
Been a fan of the Detroit Lions since 1989
Been a fan of the Celtics since 1979
and have been a fan of the Duke Blue Devils since 1980

I've been to the Garden(old and new)
Been to Fenway.
Been to Cameron Indoor(4X)
but have never been to Detroit....and since Barry is no longer there, really have no desire.

You and RWF both strike me as the type you see in the crowd wearing the jersey of the visiting team and being the lone obnoxious wolf when they score. In fact, I'm pretty sure I saw RWF at that game on Sunday in Chicago in a red jersey with a wheel painted across his face.

That's kinda like going into an opposing area bar and cheering for your team. Clapping and whooping it up when your team scores, and booing when the home team scores. And, hopefully, making it out alive....

Yeah. I about suspected that of you.

I was at a restaurant that was showing the Bulls game the night they lost.
There were two idiots doing that in the middle of about 150 serious Bulls fans.

Well, maybe you can tell me if this is obnoxious or not. 2001 I buy a single lower bowl ticket to see the Raiders play in Indianapolis. I'm wearing my black Tim Brown jersey in an ocean of Colt blue season ticket holders. Of course whenever the Colts did something good the ocean rose and if I wanted to see what was going on I had to stand too. Well, when the Raiders scored or had a big play. I jump up and start cheering like crazy. I had one fat ass behind me throwing peanuts at me. Until I finally located him and stared his fat ass down for 30 seconds like I was just dying to jump three rows of seats beat him to a bloody pulp.
There was also a woman seated behind me yelling to sit down and shut up and yelling profane things about the Raiders. I ignored her but also located her a couple of rows back. Well late in the 4th quarter with under 2 minutes left the Colts are driving near midfield trailing by 4 or 5 points. Manning throws a pass that's intercepted clinching the win for the Raiders.
I jump up and am yelling as loud as I can. I look back at the loudmouth woman, chin planted firmly in her palm, elbow resting on the armrest. I just look at her and smile, and give her the ole Al Davis "just win baby" fist pump for a couple of seconds, then turn back around and start cheering again. :D
Ahhh....warms my heart just thinking about it!!! :D

I'm not a big fan of college football, but I had an opportunity to go to Notre Dame VS Penn State 2 years ago. So for the love of the game and go to my first big college football game, I went to go enjoy. Well, my grandfather was always a big IRISH fan before he passed away, so I wore green from head to toe. It was a white out in Penn State and I was the only one it seemed wearing green with my buddy in the upper deck.

I was pulled aside and on local radio stations and making predictions about how ND was going to upset PS, because ND BLEW ASS that year with Clausens first year starting, so they were horrible. Well, my emotion and competitiveness took over, and Notre Dame intercepted early and took a 7-0 lead.

I flipped my lid, and stuffed it to every obnoxious Penn State fan that was in my section. I was heckled the whole game, and ND ended up getting beat by like 28-30 points. One dude even pushed my head with his palm at one point when State scored and knocked my hat off, I was ready to rumble but was smart about it, haha. Even though I wasn't a big fan, I had a great time and STILL hate everything Penn State because of that day.

My next mission is to go to an away game in Baltimore or Cleveland.

I've seen the Raiders play in Cleveland too. I made the mistake of taking my wife who hates football. We're walking down the concourse in Raider gear making our way to our seats, and my wife asks, "Why is everyone barking at us?"

Glad Mike Babcock pointed this out. If Chicago, Vancouver or Anaheim (....well, maybe not Anaheim) had won the west, I'd be rooting for them to beat the Penguins. When you consider how overhyped he was before, during, and after LOSING, I don't think I'd be able to stand having him shoved in my face if they won.
I think Babcock should make this a point in firing the Wings up. They're champs and outside of Detroit and Michigan, got slighted all summer.

Q. How do you feel about a rematch the Cup final from last year? And secondly, I know you've dealt with this a few times during the year, and Marian's dealt with it, but you know the story of how he left and here he is now playing the team he left to come to your team. How do you think that might effect him or how it might change things for him?

COACH BABCOCK: Well, I think, you know, just to talk about the Marian thing, I think it's a great situation, obviously, that we get to play Pittsburgh. They're a real good team. They're playing well. We know them, they know us. Should be a good battle. I think it's real good for the National Hockey League. We're an original six team with real good players. Sidney Crosby, I mean, you can't turn on any TV that covers hockey without seeing him.

Actually, when I watch the commercials from last year I think they won, not us. So I have to check every once in a while to get that figured out.

So I think it should be a lot of fun. As far as Hossa goes, he should be pumped right up to play them. In saying that, he chose to come to our team. As a man, made a decision, and I think he probably feels it's a good decision. We think it's a good decision. And, you know, now we get a chance to play his old team. I don't think there's any more to it than that.

I gotta go with the champs here...So hard to bet against them until they lose one. (Wings in 6)

I was watching some old footage of Gordie Howe today and I swear to God in some of his end-to-end rushes he looks like an army tank blietzkrieging Poland. He skates downice only to be confronted by a batallion of helpless players made up of the cast of "Happy Days". Howe stiff arms Potsie, goes helmet-to-helmet with Ralph-Malph, hurdles Cha-Chi and dekes Mr.C,....goalllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

About the Crosby thing, you must expect that. He was going to be the face of the NHL regardless of what team he would of went to play for, and the NHL does a great job to exploit that. Same thing goes for Tom Brady or Peyton Manning of the NFL. The Steelers are Super Bowl Champions, and all the press coverage is about Brady and the Patriots.. same thing on draft day and not one mention of the Champs. When the Pats were the champs, it was non-stop coverage, but that's the way I like it. The Steelers next year will overtake the Pats for the team of the decade, beat their asses in the playoffs, and win back to back Championships. They are too strong at the moment.

As for Hossa.. sucks to be him. Could of had more money, and he left like a little pansy to go to a team that looked like they had a better chance, but he IS old and you can't blame him. Unfortunately for him, he will be a loser 2 years in a row.

I'm not talking about the draft.

This is what I'm talking about. 2 weeks after the Steelers win the SB you're sitting there watching NFL Network. A commercial comes up for the upcoming season and it shows SB highlights of Cardinal TD after Cardinal TD. Mixed in are a few clips of Cardinals crushing hits on the Steelers offense, and Cardinals on the sideline cheering these positive plays. Commericial ends.

Wouldn't your reaction be "WTF was that?" I've seen those wishful thinking commercials all last summer and during the reg. season this year. I'm sure the Wings saw them too.

I love all this stuff being written
"Their tank is near empty," ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun wrote of the Wings after Wednesday's clinching overtime victory over the Blackhawks.

Wings forward Dan Cleary, however, insisted, "No one's tired now. It's the Finals."

Kris Draper was annoyed after hearing talk about the Penguins' intense desire to win the Cup.

"I don't think it's fair to say Pittsburgh's hungrier than this hockey club," said Draper, who has four Cup rings. "I totally disagree with that. We're as hungry as we've ever been. It doesn't matter how many (Cups) you've won in previous years. It's the greatest thing to win your last game."

If they do it again, maybe they'll even be the ones scoring in next season's commercials.

If the Red Wings need a commercial to get fired up to defend their title, then they are in trouble. Fans are a different story, and should be irked.. but I see what you're saying. My point I was making is that the Penguins are a marquee hockey team because of it's young talent, mainly of Crosby and Malkin, and hockey needs to push that over to the fans. No one wants to see Detroit win another Cup, even though they deserve all the coverage one can handle. Detroit has been in the spot light for many, many, many years, and has had great teams. This is the perfect time for a new, young, and fresh team take control of the league, and this is the NHL's shot. Hopefully Pittsburgh doesn't drop the ball, or puck for that matter. If Detroit wins, okay, they are deserving and have been doing it for quite some time. The world is pushing for the Pens and are ready for a new team to dominate.

I'm not usually cocky like this, but damn this is only my 2nd SC that I can remember and like any other sport, enjoy it because you don't know the next time you'll see one. This is set up for the Pens to do it. Time for the Pens to take it from "Hockey Town" and take control of the league.

A commercial wasn't needed to get them past 2 of the better teams in the league (Anaheim, Chicago) 1 big bruising team, and one team with young marquee talent. That happen to be in the much stronger Conference.

Hockey fans don't need anything shoved down their throat. Neither do players.

Now as long as the league office keeps the players out of the Smythe voting …
Sports Illustrated took a poll of those geniuses before the playoffs and asked each to name the league’s best player, teammates excluded. Washington’s Alex Ovechkin was No. 1 with 51 percent of the votes, followed by Lidstrom, Malkin, Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk, Calgary’s Jerome Iginla and Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg.

Remarkably — no, absurdly — Crosby finished eighth with 1.9 percent.

“That’s pretty ridiculous,” Penguins defenseman Mark Eaton said.

Pretty?

“I think he’s proven through these playoffs that he’s the best player in the league. He and his teammate (Malkin),” Orpik said.

It’s jealousy, really. The players aren’t so much envious of Crosby’s wondrous talent as a two-way player, a playmaker and, in these playoffs, a big-time goal-scorer. They’re envious that the NHL suits chose to make him the face of the league. That can be the only explanation for Washington’s Alexander Semin asking so foolishly last in the fall, “What’s so special about (Crosby)?”

If by "No one" you're referring to Gary Bettman I'd agree with you. I'm sure he has to change his sheets every night thinking about his boy holding the Cup. You don't seem to understand all the Crosby promoting shows a bias. That can show on the ice. (ref, Holmstrom's dissallowed goal in last year's final because his butt was hanging over the crease. )

Gary Bettman doesn't qualify as the "world" either!!! I worry about that ass being in charge of the officiating. That's my biggest beef with all the Crosby worship.

You bitch too much, esp. after winning the Cup in a dominating manner. Refs nothin'. Crosby and the Pens would of won it last year if it was up to higher powers. We're just going to beat your ass this time. 8)

Game 1 seems, to me, to be the most important game of the series. I can't see one of these great teams losing 4 of 6 so I think whoever wins game 1 will win the series. Pittsbugh seems to be well rested and healthy and Detroit seems to be a bit banged up and a little tired. I'm very interested to see how game 1 goes. I think it's an especially importnt game the Penguins. Theyneed to mentally shake the ass-beating they took last year. Either way, I think it's gonna be a great series.

If the Pens can split 1-1 the first 2 games in Detroit, then this series will be EPIC. I expect nothing less.
