In my case, it was a few years before my brain just snapped into it. It can happen instantly. I would never wish it on anyone and I never wanted this for myself.
I also disagree with the person who said "don't tell me the person starts drinking AFTER he is depressed..." well, unless you have dealt with it...you probably wouldn't understand. I am going to take a stab and say that you think a person drinks himself into being clinically depressed? Or is it more likely some guy gets so drunk off his ass, he does something stupid? Well, in any case...it doesn't matter, you're not in your right mind in either scenario. My point is, they don't have to go hand in hand. You don't need to be drunk or on drugs to be depressed.

The substance abuse thing boils down to this: Someone who willingly engages in ruining their lives by losing their job, relationships, cheating etc. by drinking and/or abusing drugs and then gets depressed as a CONSEQUENCE of such aforementioned fallout from their habits does not get my sympathy. In no way am I saying that the only people who are depressed are people who drink or do drugs. I just think the substance abusers who suffer the type of depression I just described do an injustice to people who legitimately suffer from true depression.

I guess all people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder should just shrug that off too huh? It's as easy as that. This isn't about "being a tough guy" and toughing it out or "looking for attention" I am not really sure what type of "attention" someone can enjoy while being dead. It is a scientifically proven chemical disorder that leaves you feeling hopeless in more ways than one and as I described before...in those moments that might lead you to suicide (as I have felt, personally) It is so very dark and disturbing that I very seriously doubt anyone is thinking about the pain they might cause. It's a far more personal issue, and dealing with their own pain.....
Very good points. I just disagree with the "I hope all of this angst is only twards celebs." Celebrity or not, it's a sad situation-the celebrities are just the ones in the limelight, it doesn't mean that this isn't a problem for "regular" people as well. I have personally known 6 people in the past year that have committed suicide-I have no idea what the motive behind the suicide was but I am fairly certain that at least one was related to severe clinical depression.

Or Proctology - perhaps he and SJ can be partners since they are already experts in the field.

Jesus. Woke up with a fucking sand dune in your axe wound today, huh?
I'm aiming for a spot in Aesthetic plastic or trauma surgery.
And I'm sorry for your loss, Rick.

Rick, I am so sorry. I am going through it with my brother now and I am praying it does not end the same. I know you love her and it is a horrible illness that devistates all around the person suffering with it. Your one of the sweetest guys here. Know I am thinking about you today, and that I wish I had the right words to ease your heart.
