I would have to say that I wish DDY would have stuck to his own material for his show. But, to the general fan I'm sure they don't care that it is not the original signer performing it. DDY's band does a good job with those songs but when I go to see DDY, I want to hear his stuff not the stuff by his former band mates. That's not to say that I do not care for those songs.
StyxCollector wrote:One could make the argument they want to hear the "original guy" doing the right keyboard runs, too. Some of them are DDY signature lines to some. So it's no-win all around. THe bottom line is that both Styx and DDY are doing songs sung by the other version. What you want to pay to see or choose to hear is up to you.
StyxCollector wrote:Dennis has always said he left some room for improv within the structure of certain parts, so it's nothing new. If I get a chance to see DDY again this summer it'll be interesting to see how the tunes have come along because they were a bit of a live/studio hybrid arrangement when I saw the show a few months ago. Gowan definitely sticks more to the studio parts for a lot of things (not a bad thing, just an observation).
What I think this video proves is that both lineups are more similar than they are different.

And i have to agree with you BC.I went back and must have seen it about 3 times. Both of them were good.I would love to hear DDY music. But understand the fans want to hear Styx as well.Who ever did this video was good it just fell into place.

When I saw Styx post the split, one of the things I missed was DDy's keyboard playing. I always liked it a lot. I am not putting down LG as a keyboardist, he just didn't do anything for me.

Don't know about "the world" but he is a better player than Dennis. Not a better vocalist, but a better player. Still, Dennis plays great.

Not bad for a guy who pretty much had to teach himself how to play as opposed to a guy who was "classically trained"![]()

so Dennis couldn't afford lessons? I'm not dogging him, I'm just saying that Gowan's the superior player. I LIKE DeYoung's playing and he wrote those parts originally, so that's definitely worth something. But TECHNICALLY SPEAKING, Gowan is the superior player.

His first instrument was the accordion (which I believe he had lessons for that), I remember reading somewhere he pretty much had to learn to play the piano (and later the keyboard). Of couse most would agree that Gowan's the better player seeing that he was trained and Dennis learned on his own, I like Dennis' playing better because he can improvise and his playing isn't so strict![]()

I believe DDY himself has stated he does not look at himself as a master of the keyboard. In fact, he has stated something along the lines of that he can't do some things in the conventional way and had to work around it, which he feels is one of the things that gives him his own style of playing.

Sucks enough that both he and Larry make their coin by playing songs he wrote.

songs that styx wrote
Your correct, songs that Styx wrote when DDY was in the band and has the writing credits to some of those songs. That would be a more accurate statement.

too bad jy wrote that keyboard part
JY wrote the theme, not the solos. Gowan has said many times how much he liked the parts Dennis put on those records.
