I finally tracked down a copy of this. I'm glad I did and if you collect Styx or Dennis, it'll wind up being a pretty big rarity. It was only given away for a little while in bags of Purina dog food (yeah, I know ... groan). It's got four songs from the musical:
1. Cruella Always Gets Her Way
2. Be A Little Bit Braver
3. One True Love
4. 101 Dalmatians
All of the musicians are not noted, but a few are: Tommy Dziallo on electric guitar and Jimmy Leahy on acousitc guitar, along with Suzanne DeYoung, Kate Milan, and Jimmy Leahy for backing vocals on "One True Love". Dennis sings on "101 Dalmatians" and "Be A Little Bit Braver" along with members of the cast. This is probably one of the last projects with Tommy D and Kate.
As far as the songs go, I like it. I wasn't expecting to like it as much. In my opinion, it's a bit more mature than Hunchback - sounds like Dennis learned from that. I saw that show in its last run.
The songs are not really rock at all - so if you want the stuff on 100 Years, this ain't it. It shows that he can write something as Styx-like as "Rubicon" yet do this stuff which in many ways is a complete 180. "Cruella" is a typical show piece, but has flourishes which you could identify as Dennis (especially if you heard the Hunchback stuff); there's a typical Tommy D guitar solo on this one. "Be a Little Bit Braver" is a reggae type number; Dennis shares the lead vocal on this one. It's actually pretty catchy. "One True Love" is in the "While There's Still Time" model. Having said that, the "101 Dalmatians" starts a bit more "rock" and Dennis does the lead vocal with the cast of kids. It's the most "Dennis" of the tunes IMO and with a bit of tweaking, it wouldn't sound out of place on a solo album.
I doubt the stuff with Dennis would have made a final soundtrack CD; maybe as bonus cuts.
I would love to hear the full soundtrack, but alas, it looks like that may not happen. Makes me wish I was able to see the show.
If anyone's got more than these four songs, PM me.
