101 Dalmatians Musical Free Purina CD

Postby StyxCollector » Wed Jul 28, 2010 9:41 am

I finally tracked down a copy of this. I'm glad I did and if you collect Styx or Dennis, it'll wind up being a pretty big rarity. It was only given away for a little while in bags of Purina dog food (yeah, I know ... groan). It's got four songs from the musical:
1. Cruella Always Gets Her Way
2. Be A Little Bit Braver
3. One True Love
4. 101 Dalmatians

All of the musicians are not noted, but a few are: Tommy Dziallo on electric guitar and Jimmy Leahy on acousitc guitar, along with Suzanne DeYoung, Kate Milan, and Jimmy Leahy for backing vocals on "One True Love". Dennis sings on "101 Dalmatians" and "Be A Little Bit Braver" along with members of the cast. This is probably one of the last projects with Tommy D and Kate.

As far as the songs go, I like it. I wasn't expecting to like it as much. In my opinion, it's a bit more mature than Hunchback - sounds like Dennis learned from that. I saw that show in its last run.

The songs are not really rock at all - so if you want the stuff on 100 Years, this ain't it. It shows that he can write something as Styx-like as "Rubicon" yet do this stuff which in many ways is a complete 180. "Cruella" is a typical show piece, but has flourishes which you could identify as Dennis (especially if you heard the Hunchback stuff); there's a typical Tommy D guitar solo on this one. "Be a Little Bit Braver" is a reggae type number; Dennis shares the lead vocal on this one. It's actually pretty catchy. "One True Love" is in the "While There's Still Time" model. Having said that, the "101 Dalmatians" starts a bit more "rock" and Dennis does the lead vocal with the cast of kids. It's the most "Dennis" of the tunes IMO and with a bit of tweaking, it wouldn't sound out of place on a solo album.

I doubt the stuff with Dennis would have made a final soundtrack CD; maybe as bonus cuts.

I would love to hear the full soundtrack, but alas, it looks like that may not happen. Makes me wish I was able to see the show.

If anyone's got more than these four songs, PM me.

I don't think any more songs are available, unless someone recorded the actual musical as a bootleg.

Those were nice songs, but there were several others that were most enjoyable in the musical. "Be a Little Bit Braver" was almost universally praised, even by critics who were not wild about the show. Catchy and fun and it was wonderful in the musical.

Dennis has emphasized this was a musical for children and he tried to score his songs that way. Completely different from Hunchback.

I wish "101" had continued its tour, but it was a difficult musical to mount and just sort of went away after the limited New York run.

Purina, the producers, etc. of this show partnered to emphasize and spotlight adoption of dogs from shelters. All of the Dalmatians in the cast were shelter dogs and all were going to be adopted out to homes after the musical ended.

The performance I attended had a large audience and there were many, many children there who seemed to be enjoying themselves very much.

A full-on soundtrack CD would have sold out immediately at these shows. Everyone I talked to wanted one.

Finally got this cd, very hard to find indeed! Some pretty cool songs, I like the "Be A Little Bit Braver" song, totally DDY song. I would like to hear this song made into a Rock/Reggae piece I think it would be great, switch the lyrics up a bit, nice little uplifting song!
