1 Question PER GROUP MEMBER

Postby yogi » Fri Sep 03, 2010 11:36 pm

If you could ask each member of past or current Styx (DDY, Tommy, JY, Chuck, Lawerence, Glen, Todd, Ricky) one question about the band, their career, their choices, etc... what would that question be??

heh

Dennis: So what was it like to provide a living for a bunch of guys for so long only to get shown the door?

JY: What the hell was up with "Out On A Day Pass"? And Why are you a Jerk (2 questions, I know)

Tommy: Why do you listen to such a jerk?

Glen: If I win the lottery, I'll pay you handsomely to make records. Just sayin'

Chuck: Who were you again?

Todd: If there was a drum-off between you and Joey Jordison..... a) how much of my soul would I have to sell to be there and b) how do you think it would turn out?

Ricky: Who are you again?

Gowan: Did you know that breath-rite nasal strips could help with that annoying tonality in your voice?

Yeah... I'm being slightly sarcastic with my questions (except to Glen and Todd)... just feeling a little acerbic today.

Dennis: If you could turn back time with Styx, is there anything you would've done differently personality-wise?

Tommy: Not too long ago, you were everywhere creating new music (Shaw/Blades, Damn Yankees, Your Solo Projects, Cyclorama). For the past few years, your writing seems to have pretty much stopped. Are you saving songs for a rainy day or are you going through writer's block?

Jy: Was there really no other way around the firing of Dennis? More importantly, can you show me the break lick for Renegade?

Chuck: In the early days, your bass playing could be pretty adventurous. Right about the time of the A&M albums, you seemed to reign yourself in. Was that more a direction from the songwriter, or just your own way to change things up? More importantly, how are you feeling these days?

John: What's the funniest joke you know?

Glenn: So when Dennis asked you to play with him, did you guys have to sort things out? There were a lot of comments made about him and I just wonder was it "Hey, the past is the past" or was it "we need to clear the air"?

Lawrence: How do you put up with so much sh*t from Styx fans??? Thanks for hanging in there.

Ricky: Loved The Babys. Tony Brock had a great feel. What was it like playing with him?

Todd: What are the comparisons (as a drummer) between playing with Chuck and playing with Ricky?
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Good Q, Bry - I may go past one question - on some, but it stays within the theme.

Dennis - What was your original vision for Kilroy? You know, the one that you teased in the opening liner notes of Greatest Hits. Why did you bow to pressure and dumb it down? Why didn't you take your manager's advice and wait on KWH and combine it with a movie?

Tommy - Why were you so adament on NOT releasing First Time, Boat On The River, HWBHB as singles? Did you not notice that a fellow band by the name of Journey was releasing ballads left and right during that period? It was also the period where they passed you by as being a band with a bigger impact? Why were you so worried about your rock cred? All your contemporaries saw the light. Cold War live instead of HWBHB ? Really?! REALLY?!

JY - How could things have gotten so bad that 11 years later you still are trying to erase the memory of DDY in anything Styx related? Do you know your approaching 65? Time is running out.....On an unrelated topic, what was the biggest coup business wise that you succeeded in landing for the band?

Glen - Why did you REALLY leave Styx 2.0?

Chuck - What were other album covers that you conisdered using for some of the bigger Styx records?

John P - Dude, what was with the blond dyed hair in Edge?

John C - Dude, what was up with all the satanic imagery and general weirdness?

Todd - Who is stranger, Brian Wilson or Dennis DeYoung? Are there any similarities between the two?

Gowan - You've been put in an impossible position. Is it really worth it?

Ricky - What is the deal with all the hair, dude?

JY: When are you guys gonna get your asses back in the studio?

DDY: Really what's the deal with august?

Larry: How do you feel about doing songs like castle walls/im ok this fall?

Glen: Is there anything you WON'T try with your hair?

Todd: Has a stick ever hit you in the face when it broke?

Tommy: Why don't you post on styxworld as much anymore?

Chuck: Honestly who do you think is better to work with glen or ricky?

Ricky: Sorry bro i got nothin for ya

Everett, those are good questions too.
How come nobody likes Ricky? Man, I'm learning the bass (I already play guitar) and I like Ricky's playing quite a bit.
I'm learning the bass for a Styx tribute deal. I'm actually there to sing the Dennis stuff, but I don't play a lot of piano, so...
(how's that for irony Toph!?) I think Ricky's a really good player. I love what he did with "Everything All the Time".

Maybe I'm wrong, just like his playing.

My Ricky question is easy: Who was better Bad English or Damn Yankees??

As for Glen it would be who was better to work for Tommy/JY or Dennis???

Ricky: seriously how old are you?

Todd: keith moon or john bonham?

Chuck: do you know who gave you aids?

Dennis: where did your song writing go after pieces of eight? your wooden nickle stuff was killer

JY: do you think you could have been a foot ball player?

Larry: what's up?

glen: your solo career should have got way more attention. maybe you didn't suck the right dicks

He plays the verses and the solo to BCM wrong. Recorded it's basically dotted quarter/eighth notes to give it a bit of bounce. It goes to solid quarter notes in the chorus (for the most part). Every time I've seen Styx live with him, it's been basically solid quarters all the way through. He changes the entire feel of the tune.

What's to learn with Styx bass parts? I can do 'em in my sleep :)

Well, to sing and play bass is more the trick. To try to sing Madame Blue while playing that bass line took a bit of figuring.
Same with Lady and GI. I'm new at the bass and have been a rhythm player forever. So it's just new to me. It's way fun too. I did read your post the other day about BCM and listened to it. Yeah, he does do that, doesn't he?

Gotcha. I started on bass in 1980, so I've got quite a few years under my belt. It's my main instrument.

It drives me batshit whenever I hear that song live with Styx now. To me it takes the swagger out of that song.

i have always been massively curious about what kind of money these kinds of band actually pulled in throughout their careers.

DDY: Do you maintain any form of positive communications with any remaining band members (TS comes to mind)?

JY: While you might have some alleged business savvy, when will you realize that your musical ability is average (at best), and your overall contributions to this once great band, while relevant to the their sound, is well below that of the very individual you continue to ostracize, but yet whose music you continue to feature? Your pissant attitude and inability to see reality has trivialized a great body of work. Wait, maybe you don't have such good business sense after all.

TS: Why can't you see the big picture, and tell JY to stick it? You sound much better harmonizing w/DDY & JY than w/Gowan & JY.

Chuck: See TS.

Gowan: I'm happy you make a living, and I think you have indeed made some nice contributions in the current configuration (re: Cyclorama). Do you feel any guilt whatsoever for destroying the music of my youth with your shallow, whiney head voice?

Glenn: Your contributions to Styx, in my opinion, far exceed that of Gowan (re: EOTC, Cyclorama). You played the guitars/base well, you have a good (normal) stage presence, and you sound GREAT vocally (much more pleasing to the ears than Gowan). Does this all have anything to do with why you left the band?

Ricky: Do you throw up in your mouth when you hear Gowan mangle these classic songs?

Ricky (IMO) WAY overplays.

Bass parts in Styx songs are SIMPLE. They were written that way. Dennis produced them that way, because if the bass was "busy", in most Styx songs, it would just get in the way of the other instruments and vocals.

Glen, for the most part, played all the parts VERY loyally to Chuck's original lines. I had MANY discussions with GB about this very thing - in typical self-depricating fashion he would usually tell me it's because he's not a very good bassist, but would later admit that he had a sort of 'reverance' for Chuck's parts, and as a "hired gun", his job was to play them as written.

Todd also embellishes John's original parts, but in his case, it's usually very subtle, and extremely tastefully done, always keeping the intended feel of the song.

Ricky alters nearly every bass phrase in every single song - to the point to where it's very distracting (to my ears at least).

That being said, I have HUGE respect for Ricky and his work with the Babys, Bad English, Coverdale/Page, and Fredrickson/Phillips. When doing ORIGINAL music, I think he's the bomb. Doing serious re-interpretation of other people's music (Coverdale/Page), also quite impressive. Covering other people's music faithfully, not so much.
