Salem OR was July 9th. It was an okay show but without Tommy, it was just not the same. At the time, I didn't care for much of anything on the Edge album. After waiting for fricken ever, this is what Styx gave me? The RTP shows kicked ass above all the rest between 1983 and current.

The Great America show was a late add. It was in August I think. I will get you the date tonight.

You can use my site, www.Styxtoury.com, if you are looking for dates prior to the breakup.

http://www.kathieland.com/styx/srtc/archive.htm

www.Styxtraveler.com for all dates of the current lineup

Howdy, Mark! Small world, isn't it? Bert from Huntsville, AL, here. Actually, I was doing a bit of research on the Edge of the Century tour to add a few more dates to your very own site to go along with the ones I sent you not too long ago. I guess I should have realized you would be a fixture here on the Styx boards. Rest assured that you will be receiving an update from me once I've nailed down the remaining EotC shows I've inquired about here.

On more important notes, congrats on your upcoming wedding. That's fantastic information. My wife, Cheryl, and I just celebrated our sixth anniversary last month. Lots of work, but well, well, worth the effort. I am sure that you and your wife to be will be very happy.

So, may I assume that you and your fiance' will be playing "Mr. Roboto" and "Heavy Metal Poisoning" as you light the unity candle? ... ;)

Congrats, again, and I shall toss these dates to you once the 1991 matrix is filled in.

Bert, can I ask why you need all the dates, venues and opening acts? Are you working on some kind of project of Styx or someone that was an opening act? I'm just curious :)

Actually, I've been working with Mark (styxfanNH) for a good while with his most excellent Styxtoury.com web site. I'd gotten pulled off of that to do a bit of research for a few other classic groups, but, now, I'm back into Styx research mode.

As I mentioned in reply to Mark's fantastic reply to my original post, I'll be sending the completed EotC gigography, as it's sometimes called in such circles, to him once I've nailed down the few remaining dates that I wasn't able to insert into my tour archive from existing sources.

Thanks for your question, Mike!

I've heard that the Return to Paradise albums and concerts were both topnotch. If memory serves, RTP was the only post-Kilroy album (besides compilaions) to actually go gold. "Dear John" was absolutely beautiful, both lyrically and musically.

At any rate, a big thumbs up to you for supplying the Salem, OR, date. I'll toss that into the pertinent column in my EotC matrix and then pass it along to Mark (styxfanNH) for inclusion at his most superb Styxtoury.com web page.

BTW, do you, by chance, recall the venue for the Oregon concert? ...

Thanks, again, for your help!

Edge of the Century went Gold.

The RTP tour was fantastic. My absolute favorite and I have seen every tour from Equinox in 1975 to the 1997 tour.

I remember being disappointed it was summer, hot and no white t-shirts. However, near the end of the tour a white shirt was finally added with the album cover. I wanted it soooo bad but never got one, never even saw what it looked like until recently. I have the other shirts from the Edge tour, still in good shape too!

Mike,

Here's hoping that you're able to score a nice, white, tee on eBay or some other collector-related site. I'm with you: I run lots of 5Ks and, without fail, the bright, white, tees are the best.

So, you saw two shows on the same tour. That's devotion! Despite being a fan for many, many years (Jimmy Carter was in the White House when I first began listening to our beloved boys from the Windy City), I've only seen the group once: in Huntsville, AL, in 2000. They were spot-on and a joy to watch. I can't imagine their '70s shows being any more entertaining.

All of that said: do you recall if acoustic guitarist Vinnie James opened either or both shows? And, do you recall the venu for the Wisconsin concert?

Thanks, again, for your reply. Oh, and nice avatar. Saint rules!

Yeah, I saw them 2 nights in a row back in 91 and have seen them numerous times since. As for the 70's version, well they seemed to be VERY good in those days as well. Search around on-line and see if you can find the King Biscuit show posted somewhere. My personal favorite tour was the RTP. Edge tour was good too. I drove from Tennessee to Chicago and Milw. to see them... Ahh road trips... But never bought the white Edge shirt. Saw it on e-bay a few weeks ago. it has the hour glass on it with the tour dates on the back. I tried to get someone to pick one up back in 91 and he didn't call me back until the day AFTER the show. Wish text msgs would have been around then!

Oh yeah, a SAINT fan as well. Love their stuff.

Styx did NOT sell out their show for the Edge Of The Century Tour at the Met Sports Center. I believe they had just over 10,000 there, and the Met held aroud 14,000 for concerts. It still was a great crowd.

I remember reading an article the next day in the St.Paul Dispatch that said that it was the first time that Styx had not sold out a show in Minneapolis/ St. Paul since they first headlined there in 1977. The review of the show was positive. It totally praised Dennis as an artist and a showman.

I purchased a tee shit it was black

Audio Mob opened the Tower show in Philly.

I believe they were called Audio Zone. I was at the same show.

Outstanding! I'll toss that one in, between the Paso Robles, CA, show on August 2nd and the August 6th show at the Spokane, WA, Opera House.

I was at the Tower Theater show. I remember it being one of the most hot, uncomfortable nights I've experienced (it was late May, must have been a heat wave), but the show was great, and sold out. I also saw the Mann show in Philly later in August. Outdoors, but I was under the roof near the stage. The only 2 Styx shows I was ever at, unfortunately.

Yes, I remember the Tower being a really hot & sweaty night. But my buddy, Ed, and I were just happy to be there. The show had been sold out but we went down anyway to hang out and look for tickets. We weren't having any luck at all when suddenly a guy walked out the backstage door and handed us FREE TICKETS! We could not believe our great luck!

I remember Dennis saying, "Is it hot in here or is it just me? What happened to the air conditioning? Well, if all of you are staying, we're not going anywhere either..."

I remember being surprised Glen sang as many of the Tommy hits as he did. I thought they might do a few but that some might be left out since Tommy wasn't there. We ended up in the balcony but the show sounded just fine....alot better than the Mann show in August that we also attended when my brother's friends gave us their tickets when they weren't able to go. At the Mann we were sitting in the middle of the venue under the dome. It probably would've sounded better if we'd just gotten up and moved back to the lawn seats since the speakers were always good back there.

Jimmy,

Thanks for sharing your story about the Tower Theatre gig. I live in the Deep South and, believe me, I totally understand about the need for quality air conditioning.

I believe you had a question about the opening act. As it turns out, several sources have confirmed the opener as Audio Mob. In fact, their guitarist, Nick, rated the Styx opening slot as one of his band's top ten gigs ever. No surprise there. He also mentions it being a, quote, "Spinal Tap Night." He may have merely been refering to the notion of a smaller band opening for such a well-known classic outfit. Then, again, I have visions of "Hello, Cleveland!" and Stonehenge floating around my head when I hear such an assessment.

So, given that you were there, were there any overt Tapisms (perhaps a drum set that wouldn't rise, or mike stands set way too high or low, a band member who spontaneously burst into flame) that you noticed?

Just curious ...

And, thanks, again, to you and to everyone else who's chimed in with their interesting concert recollections. I am highly encouraged that Glen was so universally accepted.

Well, I knew it was Audio something. I'd thought Audio Zone but thank you for clearing that up for me.

Don't recall any "Spinal Tap" moments at that show, no. I remember really being impressed with the setlist and thought the band was the best sounding I'd ever heard them. Much better than at the Spectrum, where I'd seen them in the past. My buddy, Ed, was also very satisfied with his first Styx show. He really liked World Tonight and thought it was a pretty cool song.

I considered myself pretty fortunate to have seen both Tommy and Glen at the Huntsville show in November of 2000. I can't recall for sure, but I'll bet they played at least a few of Glen's songs from EoTC during the show and had the added bonus of the original singer back in the fold to belt them out!

I'll have to scour the Web and see if I can find a representative setlist for the 1999/2000 shows. I do know they sang "Sing for the Day," which Tommy said they had only just recently added to the setlist. At least I *think* it was "Sing for the Day." At my age, I can't remember what I had for dinner the night before!

Thanks, again, for your help!

I saw both the 1999 and 2000 legs of that tour and, yes, Sing For the Day was performed in 2000. One verse was left out but it still sounded great.

The setlist I saw at Kahunaville Summerstage in Wilmington, DE was a little bit shorter since they were with REO Speedwagon. It ran like this:

Everything is Cool
Grand Illusion
Blue Collar Man
Lorelei
Lady
Brave New World
Edge of the Century
Sing for the Day
Fooling Yourself(The Angry Young Man)
Love is the Ritual
Miss America
Too Much Time on My Hands
Come Sail Away
Tush(snippet)
Renegade
Everything is Cool(outro)

Yes, they played all those on the 1999 leg of the tour that I saw and in longer shows in 2000 when they weren't billed with REO.

I'll look for the 1999 setlist too.

At the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA on 10/14/99 I believe this was the setlist I saw:

Everyhting is Cool
Grand Illusion
Blue Collar Man
Lorelei
Number One
Lady
Edge of the Century
Snowblind
Fooling Yourself(The Angry Young Man)
Half Penny Two Penny
Queen of Spades
Livin La Vida Loca/
Sweet Home Alabama(snippets)
Boat on the River
Lights
Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough(snippet)
Best of Times
King Chantclear Rag
Rockin' the Paradise
I Will Be Your Witness
Heavy Water
