You gotta admit that the clip with Larry singing "Castle Walls" was pretty painful :?

Weak. No emotion to the performance. Keyboard solo is weak compared to how DDY does it.

Great White Hope

Sweet!

Always thought GWH was one of JY's best tunes. Loved the beginning of that on the original Pieces of 8 Tour- Front row, yellow Styx shirt. Great tour. I remember being disappointed that Dennis kind of just spoke the intro half-assed compared to how he did it on the studio version which was very animated and cool. Kind of like he does the yell in Renegade (whimpy)- Dennis, put some balls into it like the album. Larry does that bit better than Dennis did live for sure.

I'd like to say this one sounds good cuz it's a favorite, but JY's not hitting the notes AT ALL and is choosing to scream some parts out. You can hear him struggle with them in a BIG way. In fact, between this song and the Superstars clip that was posted last week, I've not heard him struggle this much until now, and I've listened to him since 77. It's surprising because he's been singing pretty much non-stop for forever now, so you think he'd be up to it. Also, JY bungs up the guitar solo too. He totally goes out of key, which is something I've also never heard him do. Dang... Come on JY... I have faith!

HOLY CRAP! Ricky's on a Ric now! YES. LOVE LOVE LOVE that bass!

This has got to be THE worst live Styx clip I've heard ever. Tommy should ghost him on the vocal to help him out. I think that JY can do it, but because it's something he hasn't done in mega years, his muscle memory has to kind of relearn where to go for the high notes on this one. JY, blow less air, point the sound to just below your eyebrows and you'll hit those notes. Don't scream it dude.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Regarding emotion... kinda hard to find emotion with lyrics about Camelot! Not that there's a lot to relate to there for anyone actually. Not sure why Gowan's getting dogged on this one. He sounds fine to me. A little more subdued than Dennis' over annunciation of everything like he used to, but it's a decent vocal. Dennis sang it great originally and Gowan isn't Dennis, so, it's gonna be different. The keyboard sounds... come on, you can't judge that by Youtube. Pitch, playing, and intensity you can, but they sound great here. Compare them to Todd's drums. Now imagine both at full volume. It'd be very cool. Again, JY seems to be off a bit in his playing and also Tommy misses a guitar chord coming back into the last chorus.

I wish JY would get the end of the first verse right it's "if someone had told me to give it up it's a line that i wouldn't have bought" :o

He also bungles up the lyrics in the first verse - its "But if someone had told me to give it up, It's a line that I wouldn't have bought" not "but real life sure isn't like school, there's a message that just can't be taught." That is in the third verse.

Clearly this one needed more rehearsal.

I thought Castle Walls was pretty bad from start to finish, and not just because of Larry's vocals. It's just not his song (and I don't think he sounds bad on everything by any means), and I could have gotten over that if the instruments were top notch... they weren't. The guitar /keyboard instrumental section was horrible. Not heavy/badass at all like it is in the studio version or when DDY performs it. The clean, jazzy solos also left a lot to be desired. just wasn't feeling it. Maybe it's better live.

That's one of JY's biggest problems with his live vocal performances. He screams more often then not. Best example to me is Miss America. Makes me wonder if they have been tweaking his voice when making studio recordings.

With respect to my comment about keyboard solo, I wasn't commenting on the sound quality or voicing. You can't really judge that from a source like this. It was about his actual playing. I was expecting to see better. Overall, it seems to me like he was just going through the motions with it.
