What is known about the new Toto album

Postby TotoStu » Sun Aug 10, 2014 1:06 am

OK guys - it IS going to be called Toto XIV. The reason it's 14 and not 13 is because Toto XX: 1977-1997 is classed as a proper album by the guys.

The album cover is going to be a brand new variation on the sword and rings motif. It's going to have 11 tracks. One track is called "Great Expectations" and another is called "The Little Things".

Bassists included are David Hungate, Leland Sklar and Steve Lukather does bass on a couple of tracks himself.

It's going to be released in March 2015 with a world tour to follow.

Good idea for a topic Stu. I would add that Lenny Castro will prolly be heard on the album somewhere.

How do you know it IS going to be called TOTO XIV? This hasn't been confirmed anywhere. Something like this would only would make sense in Chicago, where all their previous albums have been numbered, but not in TOTO. Anyway, if this was the case it would be a pretty lame, pointless and ridiculous title, IMO.

I'd love this title, my favorite albums are their numbered ones. But I haven't read anything about the title yet either.

I don't really want to say where I heard it from, but it's no secret and the source I got it from I'm sure doesn't mind me telling people. Also - it's listed as that title on Wikipedia, AND Joseph Williams has been wearing a hat with the "XIV" logo on it.
Read into that what you will.

Oh if only I could tell you...IF ONLY. I will say this: It ain't much of a secret bro...

So... what were Toto's fourth and seventh albums called again?

Why? Who cares what it's called as long as it's good?

Well...

Simple answer: euphony.

It makes sense to call your album "TOTO IV", because it has a good euphony. It sounds firm and strong. Besides, "The Seventh One" -and not "TOTO VII", because this would be completely ridiculous- also has a good and strong euphony. So, IMO it makes no sense to you call your album "TOTO XIV" because it has a terrible euphony and sounds completely lame, unimaginative and dull. It only would make sense if you have correlative numbered albums, as Chicago does, but this is not the case. And well, in this sense I expect much more from TOTO, to tell you the truth.

PS.- Regarding Joe's hat, IMO that's only some kind of an "emblem" to show some enthusiasm and hype about the new album. That's it.

Well, that's the most important thing, of course. But artwork and title are like the cherry and the icing on the top of the cake

Any ideas who will be the new permanent bass player next year ? Toto XIV sounds fine to me.

I think it's a great name, in that it in no way bears any indication of what the music will sound like. This is a good thing.

I'm not a big fan of it personally, but being a Chicago fan as well, XIV is a 'bad omen' as that was the album that represented a massive low point in that band's carreer ... no hit singles, not in the top forty, not gold or platinum ... after decade of hit albums and singles.

Everything after the mid-70's was kind of a low point for Chicago. Let's not be too picky.

I was just joking. But All their post-Kath stuff just runs together...the albums didn't really matter. So many prolific writers in that band, and they still mostly just recorded covers. Luckily, Toto 14 will actually be written by, y'know, Toto. :D

We know that Steve P sings lead on a track w/ Joe W on BG vocals.

Judging from Steve Lukather's latest Facebook message, I'm getting a strong vibe that David Hungate may have rejoined the band as bassist.

That's the touring personnel, I believe.

Lenny Castro will be with them the next tour, too. Pretty cool. Maybe it's time to dust off Manuela Run?

I am NOT going to miss Greg on this record, that's for sure. It's so great to have the real deals back, both David Paich and Steve Porcaro :D

Andrew, do you know roughly what percentage of the album will be sung by Joe Williams? I'm hoping he sings at least 70% of the record.

I don't know about percentages as such, but Luke has indicated in a few interviews I've read that the album has songs sang by all the guys. Obviously Williams is the lead but Luke, Paich and I think maybe Porcaro all have a moment there.

Personally I think the splitting of lead vocal duties is one of the things that makes Toto interesting.

More excited for this LP than I've been for any record in quite some time.

Anyone notice that some company hijacked the official TOTO website the last few days? Looks like the band got it back. Probably just an expired domain issue, but it was pretty weird to see.

Can't wait for the new album to drop.
