Ever hear of Gestalt Psychology? It's a area of psych that deals with the idea that some 'wholes' are more than just the sum of their parts.
For me, "2 + 2 = 5" is a reference to 1984. At the start of the book/movie the main character writes in his diary that true freedom is being free to believe "2 + 2 = 4". He is later arrested for "thought crimes" and sent to the "Ministry of Love". He is put through some gruesome torture until he is reprogrammed to be an acceptable citizen who believes whatever the party tells him. During part of this, the man inflicting the torture reminds him of what he wrote in the diary and holds up four fingers and asks, "how many fingers?" He answers "four." He is on a stretcher mechanism and so his body is stretched an inch or two, with considerable pain. He asks again, "How many fingers?" "Five!" "No, that won't work, you are lying." And, he is stretched again. "Again?" "Four, five, whatever you want...make the pain stop!" (Star Trek: TNG had Piccard go through a similar situation when captured by Cardassians.)
You see, this is where things like "alternate facts" come into play. He is told, "Sometimes the answer is four, sometimes the answer is 5, or 3. Sometimes it is all three at once." The answer is not in the individuals mind, because it is finite and could be in error. The answer is in the collective party mind because it is infinite and eternal and therefore CAN'T be wrong.
People like KC, FF, and TNC have bought into and are a part of the collective Trump mind. So, when he says there were more people at his inauguration then anybody elses in history, or "thousands of Muslims cheered when 9/11 happened" or "three to five million people voted illegally in the election"...it must have some level of truth because the party leader - the mouth of their collective party mind - said it (and various people like Spicey and Scaramucci have said almost those exact words). It doesn't matter how illogical it is, or how easy it can be proved wrong, or that it violates common sense reality. They live in their own reality and make up their own facts as they are needed.
"Truth is lies" - The very definition of "alternate facts". Trump seems to believe that it doesn't matter what the truth is. Pass the worst health care bill and he'll say it's the best and have a party to celebrate it. Truth is irrelevant to someone like Trump...he invents "truth" as he goes and his followers believe it because it comes from Him.
