But, honestly, it just doesn't stick with me. It's not something I really care to go back and listen to. There is one article that compares it to Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry"...and it's a good comparison since they both are critiquing news media. But, "Dirty Laundry" doesn't just critique the news, it also asks people why they are watching this crap? Is it because it's being delivered by a cute blonde? Is it because you love the celebrity gossip? Do you like the drama of death and grieving? All Dennis is saying is the news media is a bunch of assholes. And, that's about it.
So, watching/listening is basically repeating, over and over again, the news media are assholes. So, it becomes "meh." very quick to me. Then I watch the video and the people in the chorus seem to be looking as much like assholes as the news media they are insulting. Then Dennis is being himself and acting all camping and dramatic...and that doesn't help much. The video has become something I really don't care to watch more than a couple times.
I know it's supposed to be all jovial, and fun, and almost a tongue in cheek joke. But, for me, it stops being that way after a couple times. Then it becomes a bunch of people calling another group of people assholes...and it's no longer fun.
Dennis said in one of those interviews that it is kind of an extension of a lyric in "Borrowed Time". But, "Borrowed Time" had more depth to it, a bit of a story - in a way.
"Turn Off CNN" is also comparable...but it is also a much better song with more depth, and likable.
I agree. I’d rather watch the Music Time video, and that sucks!

Years ago this was a fun forum to visit. It's sad to see that so many people left because of you, mainly you. Most were Classic Styx fans, mostly pro-Dennis but still didn't bash Current Styx like you do to Dennis. I'm not including Toph and Froy, just the others. I recently found out that a person was banned a few years ago in an argument with you. There's at least 9 people that I'm still in contact with that were on here but left.
This is how I feel about you when I saw this video.

This forum is still lots of fun.
Why are you not including froy and toph ? Convenience ? Or because people left here, because of them ? LOL

And like all buffoons removed from this board, I hadn't thought of any of them since banning.

But Monker, I think the baby killing reference is a bit graphic/too much....can you remove that quote?

Andrew, thanks to you and your board I met a lot of great people and am still friends with many of them. When some of us would post positive Dennis stuff, it was usually Monker that would come in and rip it apart, just like now. Then you would have gr8dane and ChicagoStyx add to it.
However......later Toph would rip on Current Styx but this post is about other people leaving.
Here's a few that I either met in person or still in contact with that were very active, Sadie65, bugsymalone, StyxfanNH, mtlLady, jimmy19029, RonK, Ash, swwskj, DeeJayStyx, kiddo, Pinkfloyd1973 and Classicstyfan. I'm still in contact with DarrenUK, Leesa and Adam on Facebook with most of the others.
Most of the other people on here are great and contribute just being fans of one or all of Classic Styx, Dennis, Dennis and his band, Current Styx, Styx with JC, Styx with Glen, and other solo projects.
When the Mission came out I didn't listen to it and I didn't post any comments about it.

Dennis has in one sentence pointed out the hypocrisy of the phrase “with all due respect”. Or did that escape you. We all know when someone says that phrase they’re really saying, well you know.
The lyrics are brilliant, funny and so important at this time. The video is also funny, and cathartic. To dwell on the road *$&hole said 3 times shows your prejudice toward Dennis. Everyone on this site knows your posts come from the Tommy and JY camp with a whisperer in your ear.

Then publicly since it was either 2 against 1 or 3 against 1 ( and these 2 or 3 Dennis thought were his friends) + Cahil lies were publicly told to make Dennis look like he was the bad guy.
Anyone would be extremely bitter about that. Anyone!

The lyrics are not 'brilliant'. They are very simplistic. The verses do nothing but emphasize and focus on the asshole chorus. The asshole chorus is for shock value. That is it. Anybody can write like that. I do not find it funny at all. I do not find the video funny either. If it is so funny, why do you censor yourself when you write 'asshole'? Don't you find it funny when you write it?
I've tried to avoid talking politics here, but this song is NOT timely. You all are acting as if partisan politics and politicians mining the media is new. That's bullshit. Conservatives have ALWAYS complained about bias in media. That's just a fact. Back in the Clinton days, you had Rush LImbaugh doing exactly what FOX does, and out of that sprung all kinds of conservative radio commentators. Back with Obama ran against McCain you had Palin and her "lamestream" media comments, and Obama complaining about FOX. This topic is decades old, maybe centuries...I bet if you researched, George Washington probably complained about bias in the press. It's the nature of politics.
This has nothing to do with prejudice towards Dennis. It my opinion about lazy writing and using shock value for dramatic affect. If it is about Dennis, why do I complain about the same thing being in Battlestar Galactica, in "Man of Steel" (where Zod gets his neck broken), and in various other movies and TV shows? It is nothing but the writer wanting to create an emotional reaction and taking the easiest and laziest road to get that affect.
And, who is whispering in his ear? Do you think there is some conspiracy going on here?
SuiteMadameBlue wrote:The first time people hear the chorus on this song they laugh as Dennis knew they would. It’s not shock value it’s “right on” Dennis because that’s what people are thinking and feeling when they watch the supposed news regardless of their party.
Politics? This song is apolitical. Everyone please research George Washington to see what tv and radio they were listening to back then.
“This has nothing to do with prejudice against Dennis”..................even your BATHWATER buddies chuckled at that one.

Well, you know, sometimes you have to play the role of the fool to fool the fool who is trying to fool you.
Come on Monker I like you, but you can’t win an argument by using quotes now from Star Trek

You're right.
By the way, were you planning to go to the DDY show in Chicago this past April?

I don't think it is up to you to decide how people think and feel and how they react.
Regardless, just to remind you, in the first post in this thread, I said, "The first time I listened to "With All Due Respect", I liked. It this nice rock song, nice cool rhythm, nice guitar riffs, etc."
My point is that easy shock drama doesn't last. Once that shock ends, it's empty.Politics? This song is apolitical. Everyone please research George Washington to see what tv and radio they were listening to back then.
I said "press"...you do know what that is, correct?
Yes, politics. Both you and yogi are making the argument of how topical this song is because of the state of the news media. My point is that it has ALWAYS been that way...and it is because of politics. You just don't want to see it, or admit it.“This has nothing to do with prejudice against Dennis”..................even your BATHWATER buddies chuckled at that one.
It has nothing to do with Dennis. Where are my anti-Dennis threads about his last two songs? Where is my long review about the entire album? You see what you want to see, you are blinded by your inability to process critique against Dennis. You ignore the obvious in favor of conspiracy theories and invented motives that don't exist.
SuiteMadameBlue wrote:YOU started this thread by criticizing Dennis’s lyrics focusing on the word “asshole” claiming the rest of the lyrics don’t say anything.
Then it was Henley who you say said it first and better in “Laundry” while you missed or ignored the obvious differences between them.
Henley’s is about celebrity gossip and crime sensationalism on the news while DeYoung’s is about hidden political agendas pretending to be news
Something he first alluded to in 1979, who knows maybe Henley saw it. Remember when The Long Run was number 1 and Cornerstone was number 2. Then the Eagles released “I Cant Tell You Why” and kept there momentum while “First Time” was blocked by Tommy and Cornerstone suffered.
These are Meaningless lyrics according to you,
“But all these know it alls, meatballs and Barbie dolls with breaking news and all the facts” “Breaking news with all the facts Breaking news and heart attacks”.
“We’ve come to realize and shouldn’t be surprised They’re hiding this behind their backs they’re partisan hacks”.
“Take all your bloviating jacked up to spike the ratings, and all that beer fear you’re trying to sell, all that fear you’re trying to sell and all that beer you’re trying to sell”
Wow. And all you hear is asshole. It’s not just shock value it’s funny, true and expressing a widely held sentiment. Go ahead and tell us that you’ve never yelled that at the tv.
Then the Michael Crichton reference you made with something he wrote in 1992 as proof that “Respect says nothing new, once again making the case for Borrowed Time recorded in 1979, didn’t you even notice that contradiction or should we all check colonial times first to bash Dennis.
Historically I have not been one to criticize and I only offered an opinion on the Mission because I was challenged by Clairvoyant Carnac Styx who always seems to know a little to much before anyone else.
Still, not one of the Monkers, or lovers of the Mission would dare post their favorite lyrics off the Mission compared to ones I posted.
ZOD you don’t have to because you have as much as said the Mission isn’t that good because you like Cyclorama better and oh yes and want a couple more songs. I think you mean Tommy and Willy please give us some good songs. Don’t deny it. You will.
Then you incredulously said “reply don’t reply it matters not to me” LMAO
You’d wither and die if that happened all trolls do.
gr8dane wrote:With froy ,toph and Dennis' errand girl suite, you are always a troll if you criticize Dennis.
If you criticize Styx,it is OK,you are not a troll, because Styx sacked Dennis.

Ooops, with all due respect of course .

Remember on ‘Why Me’ how Styx & Dennis built that song up at the end when Dennis sang ‘where to go and what to do, you’ve got those bills to pay..... I loved how that song built up to a climax at the end of the song. Run For The Roses does that now and I love that too.
I shift back to Locomotive, it has a great build up at the end, but it’s a way more calming & subtle build up. This makes the song unbelievably brilliant. It’s something you really never hear. It’s like the tone of the song never changes but the song builds & builds.
Tommy did this on Zens with ‘A Place to Call My Own’ which is another brilliant song.

Just the title itself is so smart. The lyrics are calling a person "locomotive" as noun. But, it's really not a noun...it is really being descriptive of that person. When you think of "locomotive", you naturally think of how it relates to a train and the one car in the train that drive everything forward. The rest of the lyrics, and a large portion of the rest of the album is about that attitude...moving forward, regardless of the circumstances around you and reaching the end goal.
Just think of the brilliance of THAT. He is using ONE WORD...and with that one word, he is defining the people on "The Mission" as a noun. But, at the very same time, it is an adjective, describing those people. In addition, it is a verb, describing the actions of those people on the mission.
It is just so cool he did that.

I brought up Michael Crichton to yogi because it is a very interesting speech about the state of media in the early 90's, the affect of the internet, and the critique that Crichton was giving. What is happening today is nothing new. That is just a flat out fact. Personally, I like "Why Speculate" a lot more...it's a bit more eye opening about pundits and their predictions of the future.
Have you researched if George Washington complained about the press back when he was President? I haven't....but I am almost CERTAIN that he did. It is the nature of politics.
Of course I deny that. There are some songs on "The Mission" that I like a lot. I believe I explained my critique when I compared it to "The Diary", which, IMO, is a perfect album. There are some obvious flaws that make it imperfect. But, that doesn't mean it is a mediocre or bad album. It just means it is not perfect.
And, yeah, I do want and expect Tommy and Styx to write some more good songs for the next album. If they don't, I'll critique that, too.

What’s the Henley lyric where he challenges the listener? This song is all from the point of view of the arrogant and corrupt newscaster.
I gave you examples of the Respect lyrics that do more than set up the chorus even though that’s there job but you can’t even acknowledge his dissection of the news and it’s hidden partisanship
something Henley never brought up. So why use Henley. Laundry was mostly about him and the way the news treated him when he was caught giving drugs at his house to underage hookers.
“Fake you” whoever said that before Dennis, nobody, it’s funny and clever.
“Cognoscenti they sure know plenty”. The know it all media and their punditry neatly skewered and once again funny. “Ruby red and royal blue”
“Kick em when there up kick em when there down” is repeated 24 times.
Yet you’re not bored by that. Asshole 3.
George Washington or any president complaining about the press is not what this song is about. Are you dense? It’s the media and it’s hidden partisan agendas
Whenever you're trapped by your own “bloviating” you run off a series of posts proving nothing then write a long screed completely non sequitur like the “Diary” post, like an amateur magician using bad misdirection. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. You broke wind and ranks when you Criticized the Mission hence the post.
I’ve read over 700 comments on Respect and found perhaps 15 including reviews that could be considered negative. It’s rave after rave, amen after amen. Some of those negative comments came from people who didn’t understand the lyrics thinking they were supporting either the Republicans or the Democrats.
Finally you are entitled to your opinion and I would never say a word if I believed it was not corrupted by the lies that you bought into for twenty years and feel obliged to defend because you’re just really defending yourself and your duping.
One simple question did Tommy and JY lie about Dennis’s departure when they posted on their web site that he was retiring and passing the baton to Tommy. Yes or no.
You won’t answer.
