Styx Kilroy Interview 1983 - In the band's own words!

Kilroy revelations in the band's own own words in 1983.

Hey kids,
Listen to JY, Tommy, John, Chuck and me talking about everything Kilroy.
These interviews, conducted in 1983, are fascinating on so many levels. Each member speaks intelligently and passionately about the Kilroy project from their own personal perspective. I have no recollection where this was done and admittedly I listened apprehensively hoping not to be embarrassed. I was not. So much to be proud of. Wow!
For me the Kilroy concert was essentially a Styx concert at its core with a cool film, and some production numbers that were meant to be entertaining. And yes there were many intentional laughs baked in. “Hey Roboto! Yer mudder was a Toyota!” delivered perfectly by John among others.
The themes of censorship in KWH would prophetically play out a few years later with the PMRC and the warning labels on albums.
The dangers of encroaching technology vs. mankind appear today in our daily lives in ways that must concern us all. We are all now just people whose circumstances went beyond our control. “Machines to save our lives -- machines dehumanize”.
To all who have ever taken a positive or negative position on the Kilroy album or tour this is a must listen. You won’t be disappointed. Listening to the guys made me once again proud to have been in that band, STYX
Cheers Robots are Us.

I used to have this interview on vinyl! It was cool to play it and hear each band member speak. At the time I had never heard Chuck and John so it was cool to hear their speaking voices.
It was a double LP set with songs on the first 3 sides and interviews on side 4.

In other words, this was a promotional interview on a promo album. Do people REALLY expect the band to be critical on such a thing? Do people expect the label and management to allow the band to be critical on such a thing? Come on.

You know what I'm talking about. It's one thing posting your excitement of the charts on here, other Facebook pages and forums but when you go directly on DDY's Facebook page, that's totally trolling.

That's really cool. I felt the same way when hearing the interviews on the radio to hear the bands voices and then when MTV started, it was really cool to see how bands back in the day looked on tv.

“In others words” says the BATHWATER drinker, other words are unnecessary we have their own to listen to!
Both Tommy and JY go into great detail not only about the Kilroy concept but their togetherness and personal contributions to the project.
JY speaks of his joy in acting the part of Dr. Righteous as he personally changed Dennis’s original character into Ming the Merciless.
Question. Why did Dennis the dictator allow that? Why didn’t he just say JY it’s my way or the highway? Because he never said things like that he was a leader not dictator.

Tommy calls Righteous a cross between Ernest Ainsley and Monty Hall which is hilarious. Tommy says “we all believed so strongly in the messages of this project” .
He reinforces other statements he’s made about Dennis the “producer” as he relates his experience with the film’s director as a task master who made him do several takes in his scenes. From that Tommy asks Dennis to not allow him to except less from himself on his lead vocals then claims that those on Kilroy were his finest ones ever.
That is debatable it’s Tommy on Crystal Ball for me.
Chuck completely exposes the hypocrisy of his BTM statement where he claimed he still doesn’t know what Kilroy was about. Why lie?

Kilroy’s legacy was exacerbated by Tommy quitting for his solo career. No one else had ever threatened to quit or quit only Tommy. His way or he’s on the highway. Had he stayed and they continued to make records and toured stadiums in 1984 as planned Styx fans would not have much to argue about and Kilroy would have just been another album.

Gonna respond to this like first off like its 1983 & I'm in college in Louisiana and the Kilroy Was Here album comes out.

I literally hated the ENTIRE side1 of Kilroy Was Here. From Mr Roboto to the horrendous Cold War, to the worst ballad Styx ever put out, to maybe their worst song they ever did to closed out side 1. I hated it at the time. That side left me thinking Steve Rovie is right, they do suck. What is this shit? Now, side 2 for me at the time was a completely different story. As the first song on side two was possibly the heaviest and most likable JY song I had ever heard. Then, from first listen, the second song 'Just Get Thru This Night' I thought this song is a masterpiece for Tommy Shaw. Then came Double Life which was a typical JY Styx song outside of the lyric 'I'm schizophrenic and so am I' which I loved. Finally you have Have'nt We Been Here Before was this first duet I had heard Tommy & Dennis do and their voices blended perfectly on another excellent song that seemed relevant. Even the Reprise was good. After about week 1 of my purchase of the Kilroy album, I probably didnt listen to Side 1 again for another 10-15 years. The exception to this being right before & right after the Kilroy Was Here Tour shows. I listened to side two all the time as I thought it was brilliant.

This brings me back AGAIN to the Kilroy Was Here Shows particularly the Texass Jam Show that Styx headlined at the Cotton Bowl. The actual shows were GREAT and as John Panozzo states prior to these shows, all senses will come into play. At the TX Jam show and another show they played in Shreveport (that's never been listed Hirsch Memorial Coliseum) I attended these with many non Styx fans. Almost every person that I went to these shows with thought that the Kilroy Show was the BEST concert they had EVER seen. It was revolutionary. Most of us had NEVER seen anything like it before. It actually was nothing more than a greatest hits show with about 5-6 Kilroy songs put into the mix to fit the concept of the movie & band members acting out the script. That's what it was. I'm proud to say, I saw 3 times. I dont know anyone who came close to disliking this show.

One last time I will say this, Tommy, JY & Cahil 100% lied on the Styx Behind The Music episode about what truly happened at the Texxas Jam Cotton Bowl show. The 35,000 plus fans that remained LOVED it. No doubt they were by far the best band, that BY FAR put on the best show that entire long HOT day & night. They 100% earned the headlining title.

One last thing many people tend to ignore. Tommy, Dennis,& JY went solo after Tommy quit Styx. Then Tommy joined Damn Yankees & Styx reformed with Glen replacing Tommy. After that Styx ( JY, Tommy, DENNIS, Chuck & Todd replacing John) got back together. Together they had two very successful tours ( Return to Paradise & 25th Anniversary Grand Illusion). They also then planned another all new Styx album and tour. At that point, Dennis could not fulfill his tour obligation. It was only then that Dennis became a tyrant and Kilroy became this monster. Nothing was spoken about any of this until after Dennis couldnt tour. If he was such a fuc kin tyrant and the Kilroy tour was so horrible why on earth did they get back together for years on the Return To Paradise Tour, The Grand Illusion tour, 7 Deadly Zens promo in Chicago, Brave New World album and planned tour. Why would Tommy, JY & Chuck agree to do this if Dennis was such a tyrant and Kilroy was such a boogeyman?

To repeat a line from Dennis when talking about the Grand Illusion the line is 'its all bullshit' and it was bullshit that was very carefully orchestrated by JY, Tommy & Chuck in the name of $$$$$$$$. 1 VS 3( with lots of people in 3's ears also looking for $$$$) who ya gonna believe???
