Adam wrote:...And at the risk of "hearing it", like it or not, the Goo Goo Dolls version of Supertramp's "Give A Little Bit" and Edwin McCain's recent version of Dobie Grey's "Drift Away" BOTH did very well as covers. So even if Froy and ItsMyLife hated these covers, the point is they are hits.

And if Froy was CEO of a record label who had both those hits I bet his tune would change instantly...

Showing my ignorance here...wasn't the remake of Drift Away WITH Dobie Gray and done by Uncle Kracker? At least that's the only remake I knew of that song?

Peace

Could Bad Medicine errrr... I mean It's My Life be the the split/schitzo personality of our former Arby's loving, Oven Mitt toting New Shooze.

For some reason I remember the Shoozster hating Bon Jovi and stating how much better Def Leppard was. He couldnt stand Dennis either, and praised the 'New Styx'. It would be the perfect front for his reappearance.

I am thinking someone just wants to play the other side of the coin to rattle some chains!

Sadie, it's I who shows my ignorance, you are most likely correct about the Drift Away remake...I THINK...

Useless information from Suite:

"Drift Away"

Dobie Gray recorded it March 1973, Billboard charts #5

The Rolling Stones recorded in November 1973, but it was never released

Rod Stewart covered this song

Uncle Kracker covered this song - Billboard Top 10

If Froy were the CEO of a Record label he would only have one artist signed and no bands.

Thank you very much Meister Andrew.SuiteMadameBlue kindly sent me those earlier, but there was not enough space in my in-box.
Well,,,I slagged the people who slagged the soundbites due to the limited time of them. Therefore it is also not enough time to say if these are great. This will not be top 10 material I am sure, but if some record company is paying Styx to put this out ,who can blame them for making it.I will need the whole cd to make a fair review.
I must say though,,,on 'I don't need no doctor' Larry sounds great as Steve Marriot.
Jesus loves you ,but everybody else thinks you're a knob.

It's a solid record...a bit of fun.
Much better than some other covers albums I have heard, but new material is always preferable :)

Maybe someday Larry will try to sound good as Larry and not as
Steve Marriott , Dennis DeYoung and John Lennon.
Maybe he could learn to stand on his own 2 feet not other peoples

Cats in the Cradle

We've Got Tonight

Did any of these chart?
Who did Cats In The Cradle?
Yes, they all did...they must have because I used to hear them constantly. Ugly Kid Joe, big in the 80s, re-recorded "Cats..."
Ugly Kid Joe was actually a 90s band. Their first record came out in late 91 or early 92. Their cover of "Cats in the Cradle" was on their second record.

As for the other songs listed, they were all big hits in the 80s.

Off the top of my head, here are some other cover songs that were big in the 80s :

Joan Jett's version of "I Love Rock and Roll"
Bow Wow Wow's version of "I Want Candy"
David Lee Roth's versions of "California Girl" and "Just a Gigolo"
After the Fire's version of "Der Kommisar"
Toni Basil's version of "Mickey"
Poison's version of "Your Mama Don't Dance"
Bowie and Jagger's version of "Dancing in the Streets"
Power Station's version of "Bang a Gong"
Great White's version of "Once Bitten, Twice Shy"

Plus that really bad medley of "Freebird/Baby, I Love Your Way" by Will to Power

Wow... never heard either of them and I do listen to the radio.... me thinks your standards for "hits" are very low.

Being played on the radio doesn't automatically entitle a song to "hit" status.

And, not being a 'hit' doesn't mean it's a bad song.

Never said that... but people are throwing around the term "hit" rather loosely around here.
